Creating a Collection of Snow Globes
Although you’ll hear a lot of people talk about their stamp collection or the coins they’ve been collecting for years, there’s another type of collection that is considered more fun by many. Snow globes are something that most of us associate with the holidays when we were younger. However, many grown women and men find them so charming that they start their own collections.
The interesting thing about them is that you can find them year round. They almost always resemble some sort of winter scene, but snow globes can be bought in many different places during the autumn, spring and even the summer.
Prices vary depending on the size and the details found inside. Some depict just buildings or trees and mountains, other snow globes include miniature people complete with small hands, boots and smiles. A larger snow globe will usually cost more than a smaller one.
Many people collect them from different locations. This works well if you can carry them back with you as shipping snow globes often takes special requirements that can prove costly. It’s fun to purchase one in a location that is known for snow such as Switzerland or Alaska and then display it in your home in California. It’s like having a small reminder of winter with you always.
They make great gifts as well. Who doesn’t smile when they shake one and then watch the snowflakes fall? Children love them but it’s a good idea if you are considering getting a snow globe for a child, to buy one that is made of plastic as opposed to glass. The little one would be heartbroken if they dropped it and it broke. With plastic snow globes that’s much less likely to happen.
Ones made for the holidays are even more special. These may have a display that features Santa Claus or a Christmas tree. Snow globes with a holiday theme often also come complete with a music box in the base that plays while the snow inside falls. If you have some of these, it’s really important that you store them properly at the end of the season so they don’t get broken.
A sturdy cardboard box with lots of packing peanuts works well. Also, label the box as fragile so if it has to be moved during the course of the year the person handling it, knows to be extra careful. It’s a horrible feeling to pull a snow globe out of a box only to discover it’s cracked.
